Cougar Track Makes Strong Showing at District Meets

Junior-High Girls Take Second in Van Horn

It's been a great season for Cougar track this year! Our varsity and junior-high teams recently had their district meets in Van Horn – and Dell City athletes made strong showings.

At the junior-high meet, held Saturday, April 2, the Cougar girls' track team was phenomenal. The team took second place – out of seven teams. Coach Joey Czubinski was thrilled for his athletes.

“With only five girls, we couldn't enter in eight of the 17 events,” Coach Ski said, “and we finished second place, by only 16 points. I couldn't imagine it being this good – but it was!”

In both the 4x100-meter and 4x400-meter relays, the Cougar relay runners – Samanta Espinoza, Nicole Martos, McKenna Crabb and Kinsey Tate – took first place. Tate took gold in the long jump, and Crabb came in first in the 400-meter dash. Tate had another first-place finish in the 200-meter dash, and Martos one first in the 300-meter hurdles. In the long-distance events, Rhiannon Muise took fourth place in both the 1600-meter and 2400-meter runs.

The boys' track team – of Brandon Crabb and Axel Sotelo Alpista – also had a good day at the district meet, taking fifth place. Once again, Coach Ski praised his team.

“Brandon and Axel performed excellent all day,” he said. “Just two guys finished fifth out of seven teams – it's awesome.”

In highlights, Crabb took third place in both the long jump and the 300-meter hurdles. Sotelo Alpista ran strong in the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes, and took fifth place in the triple jump.

The varsity track team had its district meet a week earlier – on Saturday, March 26 – and also had a good day. With just four boys, the team finished sixth out of eight teams. The boys – Esteban Morales, Luis Ayala, Luis Guillen and Reyes Espinoza – took fifth place in the 4x400-meter relay. And other highlights included a sixth-place showing for Espinoza in the triple jump, and eighth-place outing in the 100-meter dash for Morales.
