Dell City FFA Headed to Area Contest Saturday (Nov. 20)
Dell City FFA is headed to the area competition in Ira, Texas this Saturday (Nov. 20), after a good showing earlier this month at the district leadership development event in El Paso.
The Cougar FFA chapter took home five banners from the district contest, which was held at Eastlake High School on Nov. 6. Dell City Ag teacher Mark Edens, who joined the district this year and has made revitalizing FFA a priority, said he was proud of the students' strong performance.
“It's a long time since we've had five banners here in Dell City,” Edens said. “We're pleased and excited.”
Dell City FFA took first place in chapter conducting – and participants in the event included: seniors Esteban Morales and Shania Vargas; juniors Orlando Fuentes and Damien Spiers; and sophomores Iris Ayala, Luis Ayala and Reyes Espinoza. In chapter conducting, FFA members must demonstrate that “they can run a meeting efficiently and effectively,” Edens said, “following the rules and procedures of FFA” – elements of the event include conducting opening and closing ceremonies, the presentation of the treasurer's report, minutes and more.
The same group and a freshmen team – of Cougar ninth-graders Jose Acosta and Luis Guillen – both took second in the quiz contest. In the quiz event, students are tested on the official FFA manual and chapter-conducting guidelines – with 150 questions, half of which are true or false, half of which are multiple choice. The two freshmen also did well in the creed speaking event – in which FFA members recite the organization's creed from memory – with both Guillen and Acosta taking third-place honors.
The older students now make the trip east to Ira – to compete in both chapter conducting and the quiz event.
Good work, Dell City FFA, and good luck this weekend!
