The Roll Continues, As Jr High Cougars Beat Van Horn
Congratulations to our Cougar junior-high basketball team, who were victorious last night (Feb. 3) against the Van Horn Eagles – in a “good, close game against a tough opponent,” as Coach Joe Czubinski said. The Cougars won by a final score of 16-11.
It was the squad's fourth victory of the season, and Coach Ski said his team is “showing definite signs of improvement from game to game.” The junior-high Cougars have three games remaining before the district tournament, and Coach Ski said that he, Coach Trever Czubinski and the players “just hope to just keep plugging along and making the necessary adjustments to be a better team.”
“You can see the stats,” Coach Ski said. “Our leaders are stepping up, and the role players are really doing a good job.”
Brandon Crabb led the Cougars in scoring last night, with seven points, along with 13 rebounds. Eli Tate had six points and 16 rebounds, and point guard Isaac Rangel drained a three-pointer, and had two rebounds, seven steals and two assists. Fellow starters Kinsey Tate and Nikki Martos were fierce on defense and strong on the boards, with Kinsey taking five rebounds and Nikki taking four. Dustin Neely and Rhiannon Muise came off the bench at critical times to ensure the win.
The Cougars dominated early, and led 11 to 4 at the half. The Eagles, however, mounted a spirited comeback – adding an aggressive full-court press in the second half – and outscored Dell City in the last two quarters. But the Cougars held on – and a late break-away layup from Brandon Crabb sealed the Dell City win.
A big thanks to the Cougar fans who came out to support the team, to Ms. Elsa McCray and her crew for preparing and serving the excellent concessions, and to our Van Horn neighbors, who made the drive up to attend the game! The Cougars play Marfa tonight, and will travel, along with our varsity team, to face Balmorhea tomorrow. The junior-high team will be back at home next Tuesday, Feb. 9, for their last scheduled game of the regular season – once again with Van Horn as their opponent – beginning at 4 p.m.
