Jr. High Cougars Beat Van Horn
Congratulations to our junior-high coed basketball team, which scored an impressive victory over the Van Horn Eagles, in Van Horn, Wednesday (Jan. 27). The Cougars came away with a 26-15 win.
Coach Joe Czubinski said it was a “great overall team effort,” and that his squad “played great on both sides of the ball.”
“We are starting to play better offense, to go along with a sturdy defense,” Coach Ski said. “It was a total team victory – and Coach T and I are very proud.”
Coach Ski and Coach Trever Czubinski lead a seven-player coed team. It was a close contest during the first half of Wednesday's game – the Cougars led by 2 points – 14 to 12 – at the half. But Dell City pulled away in the third quarter – scoring 8 points, and holding the Eagles scoreless. Then, the Cougars held on in the fourth quarter to take the win.
Eli Tate, grade eight, led the Cougars in scoring – with 11 points, as well as nine rebounds, six steals and two assists. Seventh-grader Brandon Crabb was also hot last night, with 10 points, 10 rebounds, three steals and 1 assist. Isaac Rangel, grade six, is “getting better each day as point guard” for the team, Coach Ski said, and Rangel had five points, two rebounds, five steals and two assists last night. Nikki Martos, grade seven, and Kinsey Tate, grade six, made crucial contributions on defense, and Martos was strong on the boards – with seven rebounds. And Rhiannon Muise and Dustin Neely, both seventh graders, “chipped in off the bench,” Coach Ski said.
The junior-high basketball team has its next game against Sierra Blanca, Thursday (Jan. 14) – the location is yet to be determined. And the Cougar varsity team hosts Marfa Tuesday (Jan. 12) at HOME at 5 p.m. Go Cougars!
