Makayla VanVooris joins Dell City ISD this year as our fifth- through eighth-grade math and science teacher. Ms. V knew from an early age that she wanted to be a teacher, and there's no mistaking her gifts as an educator: With her creativity in the classroom, she's challenging and energizing Cougar students.

 

Ms. V set the tempo and made an impression early, with a hands-on activity that sent students home from their first days of school excited and inspired.

 

Science courses typically begin with a discussion of the scientific method. But rather than lecturing on the topic at the start of the year, Ms. V had her students, in all grade levels, put the scientific method into practice by conducting an experiment: With classroom materials, students created “roller coasters” through which to roll a marble, and competed for the fastest design.

 

“They had to come up with a hypothesis and a design,” Ms. V said. “Then they had to come up with ways to test it, and ways they could modify it. So they had a day to plan, a day to build, and a test day. We timed how fast each marble went, and talked about how the designs could be modified. It was really fun to see the differences – and they all enjoyed it.”

 

Ms. V teaches math in the morning – two hours with fifth- and sixth-grade students, and two hours with the seventh and eighth grades. The two groups each have an hour of science instruction in the afternoons.

 

Curricula vary for the grade levels, and teaching two grades in the same classroom presents challenges, and opportunities. Ms. V typically leads one grade in group work, while the other grade pursues a project independently – and then flips the arrangement. In science, sixth- and eighth-grade students are focused primarily on Earth sciences, while seventh graders get “the big overarching picture of the life sciences,” she said.

 

Two hours is a long time for students – especially the younger ones – to focus on math, so Ms. V mixes things up towards the end of the class time.

 

“By the end of the period they're a little antsy to be done with math,” she said, “and I don't blame them. So I try to throw in some math games, using a quiz or an online game, to try to break it up – and that seems to help.”

 

Ms. V is responsible for preparing students for the state-mandated STAAR exams, and students spend a little time each day answering sample STAAR questions – “to get them used to that format,” Ms. V said. She does focused tutoring with students who have struggled on STAAR tests in the past – or when a diagnostic exam shows that a student needs extra help in a particular area.

 

She's also committed to ensuring that her advanced students are stimulated and challenged. Each gifted-and-talented student has selected a math or science project to pursue for the entire semester or school year. Students work on those projects when they finish the main classwork early. One student, Ms. V said, is researching Texas wildlife – and will be presenting to fellow students at the end of the project.

 

Ms. V is excited about the content she teaches – math is a longtime passion – but one of her top priorities in the classroom transcends the specifically academic. She said her students often have the right answers – but are tentative, hesitant. She wants to change that.

 

“It's about building their confidence,” she said, “particularly in math. I want them to be confident in knowing what they know – because even outside of school, that confidence is important. So that's the biggest goal – growth, and building their confidence.”

 

Fundamentally, Ms. V said she's been delighted by how receptive and enthusiastic her Dell City students are. This will be Ms. V's first full year as a teacher, but she took charge of a classroom – teaching middle-school science in her native Ohio – during the second half of last year. Dell City students are different than those she worked with in Ohio, Ms. V said.

 

“They're pretty eager to learn,” she said of Cougar students, “and very self-motivated. They come to me and ask, 'Can I come to tutorials? Will you help me?' It's such a nice change. They're also really fun – they make me laugh a lot.”

 

Ms V said the difference might partly be due to Dell City's quiet, rural context.

 

“Where I lived was more of a city setting,” she said. “There was a lot more to do – so their minds were not as focused. Here, there are fewer distractions.”

 

There's always a learning curve for beginning teachers, as they frequently put in long hours outside the classroom, preparing projects and lesson plans for the first time. But Ms. V seems thoroughly at home as a teacher. It's no surprise – it's something she's been anticipating, and working towards, for many years.

 

Beginning in third grade, she volunteered to go to the classrooms of younger students and read to them. As she moved into middle- and high-school, she spent her study halls and free periods teaching and tutoring elementary students.

 

“I did that all through school,” Ms V said, “and I found that I love being with kids. It's just kind of where I'm meant to be. I love learning, so to help other people get excited about it – that's why I'm a teacher.”

 

Ms. V attended Taylor University, in Indiana, where she trained to teach pre-K through sixth-grade students, in all subjects. Math instruction was her special focus.

 

“Math was a passion,” she said. “I've loved it from a young age. It just makes sense – and it's logical.”

 

She found herself called on to teach science last year, in her first job out of university. And she found that that too suits her.

 

“I love the outdoors,” Ms. V said. “So science fits my personality, to want to teach it and explore it.”

 

It was a farming connection that brought Ms. V from Ohio to Dell City.

 

Ms. V's husband, Micah, is a farmer, with a degree in agricultural engineering from Ohio State University. Last year, Micah – who was them Ms. V's fiance – attended a conference for young entrepreneurial farmers in Ohio. The main speaker was Jay Hill, of Dell City's DVRM and Chaffhaye farming operations.

 

Micah was inspired by Hill's presentation, and immediately felt him to be a kindred spirit, “a solid guy with solid values.” Then, last February, Hill announced on social media that he was hiring.

 

Micah asked Ms. V if she would consider making the move to West Texas.

 

“I said, 'Sure, why not?'” she said. “'Let's see what happens.”

 

Micah had a phone interview, and then was invited to visit Dell City and tour the farms. Ms. V joined him, and Hill arranged for her to visit the Dell City School, about possible teaching jobs.

 

Soon both Ms. V and her fiance had job offers. Micah started here in the spring. But he returned to Ohio in June, and the two were married, and drove together to Dell City.

 

“Here we are a couple months later,” Ms. V said. “It really all fell into perfect place. It's crazy, but it was meant to happen.”

 

Ms. V said she and her husband are still meeting new people and establishing connections here. But they already feel at home in the small-town, rural setting.

 

“It's a nice change of pace,” Ms. V said. “Back where we're from, it's very industrialized – so everything is 'go-go-go, efficiency, get things done as fast as you can, and don't worry about anybody else.'

 

“That's not who my husband and I are,” she said. “We like relationships. We knew we didn't want to stay there, so coming out here has been nice. Here, when you see your neighbor, you just walk on over and chat.”

La Sra. Básicamente, la Sra. V dijo que está encantada con lo receptivos y entusiastas que son sus estudiantes de Dell City. Este será el primer año completo de la Sra. V como maestra, pero se hizo cargo de un salón de clases, enseñando ciencias en la escuela secundaria en su Ohio natal, durante la segunda mitad del año pasado. Los estudiantes de Dell City son diferentes a aquellos con los que trabajó en Ohio, dijo la Sra. V.

La Sra. V dijo que la diferencia podría deberse en parte al contexto rural tranquilo de la ciudad de Dell.

 

“El lugar donde vivía era más un entorno de ciudad”, dijo. “Había mucho más por hacer, por lo que sus mentes no estaban tan concentradas. Aquí hay menos distracciones ".

 

Siempre hay una curva de aprendizaje para los maestros principiantes, ya que con frecuencia pasan muchas horas fuera del aula, preparando proyectos y planes de lecciones por primera vez. Pero la Sra. Fue una conexión agrícola lo que trajo a la Sra. V de Ohio a Dell City.

 

El esposo de la Sra. V, Micah, es un agricultor, con un título en ingeniería agrícola de la Universidad Estatal de Ohio. El año pasado, Micah, quien era el prometido de la Sra. V, asistió a una conferencia para jóvenes agricultores emprendedores en Ohio. El orador principal fue Jay Hill, de las operaciones agrícolas de Chaffhaye y DVRM de Dell City.
